Tanah Lot

A part of the Indonesian island of Bali, Tanah Lot comprises one of the oldest Hindu pilgrimage temples in the World Pura Tanah Lot, which means “Land in Sea” in the Balinese language. This temple is situated at the top of a large offshore rock that has been changing its shape continuously due to ocean tides.

It is believed to be constructed by the 16th-century Dang Hyang Nirartha. He decided to construct a temple in this area because he felt it to be a holy place to worship the sea Gods. Now, it is one of the seven sea temples present on the Balinese coast. These temples are not only influenced by Balinese mythology but the impact of Hinduism is also very much prominent. At the base of the rocky island where this temple is situated, venomous sea snakes are believed to be found that protect the temple from evil intruders and any sort of negativity. Moreover, locals also believe that this temple mainly receives protection from a giant snake which was created from Nirartha’s selengdang which is a type of sash.

Pura Besakih Temple

This temple is situated in the Besakih village and is the most important as well as the holiest temple of Balinese Hinduism. This temple was constructed on the slopes of Mount Agung (nearly 1000 meters up), it is a beautiful complex of 23 individual but related temples.

This temple consists of stepped terraces as well as a flight of stairs ending up into a number of courtyards and brick gateways that ultimately leads to the main location or Meru structure (also called Pura Penataran Agung). The spiritual or symbolic centre of this temple is the lotus throne or Padmasana which dates back to the seventeenth century.

The tragedy of Pura Besakih Temple

In the year 1963, as a result of a series of volcanic eruptions, approximately 1,700 people lost their lives. Miraculously, the lava couldn’t reach the temple and passed by mere meters.

Uluwatu
